Really?

Even if you don’t know the title of the song that plays during this advertisement (and most people don’t), it’s one of those melodies that nearly everyone recognizes. In actuality, it was the first thing that caught my attention when this commercial aired on television, and it’s one of the biggest strengths in this ad.

The overall concept implied by this commercial is that people spend too much time on their phones, and that the Windows Phone 7 is designed to “get you in, and out, and back to life.” Although I greatly appreciate some of the humorous shots in the ad, such as the man dropping his phone in the urinal and the woman being ignored by her husband before bed, I’m not sure this was the greatest angle to go with because, in the end, the Windows Phone 7 is just another phone that will also distract us from life. Even their claim to “get you in, and out, and back to life” seems extremely vague and unproven to me, so I wouldn’t venture to say the messaging of this advertisement is effective.

Nonetheless, as I mentioned, the song (Edvard Grieg's In The Hall Of The Mountain King for the play Peer Gynt, Suite No. 1, Op. 16 1874-75) paired with a humorous reel of the realistic and negative events that occur from being completely wrapped up in a phone made for an enjoyable and memorable advertisement. In addition, I’m pretty sure that song will be stuck in my head all day…
